But it’s true. Before disc brakes, cars had no brakes. Decades of brake-less cars. We relied on gravity to stop us, since everywhere we went was uphill both ways.

I can almost understand it. Kids are used to seeing disks and calipers so when they see drums they think the disk and caliper are missing so no brakes. Sure, it makes no damn sense but kids don't always make sense.
